The Federation Starbase, Deep Space Nine, hangs in space. There are other ships around the station and things are getting back to normal after the war. The Defiant is proudly docked at the outer docking ring.
INT. COLONEL KIRA'S OFFICE-DEEP SPACE NINE
COLONEL KIRA NERYS is sat at her desk reading a report on a PADD.
The COMM sounds.

BOWERS V.O.
You have an incoming transmission from Cardassia.
KIRA

BOWERS V.O.

The COMM channel goes dead.
KIRA taps the COMM panel on her desk and the face of ELIM GARAK arrears.

She smiles.

I've got some information that the Federation may be interested in.
INT. ADMIRAL LIU'S OFFICE
Admiral LIU is sat at her desk and is talking to KIRA over the COMM panel on it.
KIRA looks pleased with herself.
KIRA
I thought that it would be best to pass this information along, Admiral
LIU
You did the right thing to bring this to me, Colonel
(Beat)
How far do you trust this man, Elim Garak?
KIRA
In this case he has no reason to lie
LIU
What do you mean?
KIRA
Mr. Garak thinks as lying as a sport

INT. OBSERVATION LOUNGE
Present are TERRELL, MARLINSON, WORFIELD, CURTIS and CH'TORK. MARLINSON is carrying a model of GENESIS

MARLINSON places the model ship on the empty plinth from the previous episode.
MARLINSON
It doesn't look quite right.
She turns the model to face the opposite direction

The three officers go into the Observation Lounge.
INT. OBSERVATION LOUNGE
TERRELL, MARLINSON and WORFIELD enter the room.
They sit at the table

Admiral Liu's given us a hell of a mission
MARLINSON
What is it?
TERRELL
Starfleet has been given information about an abandoned Dominion penal colony on Kelrabi IV.
MARLINSON
Shouldn't this information have been handed over at the end of the war?
TERRELL
Probably
(Beat)
I get the feeling the Cardassians didn't know about it though.
MARLINSON
Why?
TERRELL
Someone would have mentioned it in the last four months.
MARLINSON
True
(Beat)
This is gonna have some adverse affects on the crew
WORFIELD
That's an understatement
MARLINSON
I don't see how
WORFIELD
Every member of this crew lost someone during that war
(Beat, she glanced at TERRELL)
This is gonna bring back heaps of bad memories.
TERRELL
I agree
MARLINSON
It's not as if I didn't lose people during the war as well, Commander
WORFIELD
You don't show it

(Beat)
This is exactly the kind of problem this is going to cause.
(Beat)
I suggest that we get this mission completed as fast as possible. We have to round up any survivors and take them back to Starbase 494. Nothing else, understood?

Leah, will you brief Doctor Walsh?
MARLINSON
Yes, Captain
MARLINSON and WORFIELD leave the room; TERRELL sits contemplating the mission to come and the past.
EXT. SPACE
GENESIS at warp
INT. BAR-HOLODECK
PERIM, CURTIS and BENVAR are sitting at the bar
PERIM
Ever since I left the Enterprise I've had nothing to do. I came here for a change; I thought flying a one-person fighter would be more fun than flying the Federation Flagship. So far I've spent more time under the fighter than in it.
CURTIS
I'm sure you've had plenty to do
PERIM
That's the problem there isn't anything
(Beat)
If I'm not in that fighter then I'm sat around doing nothing
BENVAR
The company could be worse
PERIM
Don't try and cheer me up Benvar, I'm not in the mood
BENVAR

PERIM
I don't know yet

But I know I can't stand another fortnight of this
INT. SHUTTLEBAY TWO
There are two ARGO class shuttles with their aft hatches open. One with a ground vehicle in and the other without. CH'TORK and WALSH are loading one of the shuttles with supplies.
WALSH
Have you ever been to a Dominion Penal Colony?
CH'TORK
No
(Beat)

WALSH
Not unless you count Cardassia
CH'TORK
You were on Cardassia?
WALSH
All of the medical staff from DS9 were sent to try and help
(Beat)
After three weeks Starfleet Medical arrived and we were all sent home
CH'TORK
Was it really as bad as the FNN made out?
WALSH
It was worse
(Beat)

After fighting the Cardassians for two years I bet it was hard for you to start treating them
WALSH

Out of the window we see that GENESIS has dropped out of warp and is in orbit of a planet; Kelrabi IV.
INT. CORRIDOR
TERRELL, MEKAR and VAN'AR are walking down a corridor talking
MEKAR
Why have I been assigned to this mission, Captain?
TERRELL
Unless you've forgotten the Romulans were enemies of the Dominion as well, Subcommander.
(Beat)
There may be some Romulan survivors
MEKAR
I hope that is the case
(Beat)
Too many of our officers are still missing
VAN'AR
They are probably dead
(Beat)
And if they are then they likely died with honour
MEKAR
I've never heard a Klingon talk that way about a Romulan
VAN'AR
To be blunt, Subcommander
(Beat)
You won't hear many. But the Romulans impressed me during the war
TERRELL

VAN'AR
The Romulans may have more honour than we sometimes give you credit for
MEKAR

The three laugh before turning into the Shuttlebay.
EXT. SPACE
GENESIS in orbit of KELRABI IV. The Shuttlebay door opens and two ARGO CLASS shuttles exit the bay and head down to the planet.
EXT. PLANET SURFACE
The two Shuttles fly low over a jungle before flying over the PRISON FACILITY, they turn back and land within the outer perimeter on a piece of ground next to what seems to be the main entrance.
From the two shuttles the away team exits: TERRELL, MARLINSON, WORFIELD, PERIM, WALSH, MEKAR, VAN'AR, DANTON and KIEV.
TERRELL
Anita,
(Beat)
Check the perimeter
WORFIELD
Perim, Danton you're with me.
PERIM goes back into the shuttle and takes out the ground vehicle
PERIM
Coming
DANTON and WORFIELD board and head toward the perimeter
TERRELL
I guess we should go inside.
INT. SMALL BARRACKS
There is a small Dominion designed barracks that contains several badly starved and ill prisoners. Present are two Klingons: BAK'RA and TY'KOR, a Romulan: KRATEC and two Starfleet officers: LIEUTENANT PETER SCHWARZ and CAPTAIN JAKE BRAND, who is unconscious.
BAK'RA takes a ration pack from the floor of the cell and starts to open it
TY'KOR
That's our last food pack
BAK'RA
Correction: It's my last food pack
TY'KOR goes and smacks the other Klingon around the face
TY'KOR
You greedy PetaQ
BAK'RA
I'm not greedy
(Beat)
I'm hungry
The two start fighting over the ration pack
In the background the door starts to glow and it is forced open to reveal TERRELL, VAN'AR, MEKAR, WALSH, KIEV and MARLINSON
VAN'AR
(Shouts)
That's enough
The two Klingons stop fighting.
BAK'RA
Who are you?
VAN'AR
Van'ar, daughter of Kenar
TY'KOR
You are not a prisoner here
VAN'AR

The good news is the war's over

Just after the Dominion abandoned us here
WALSH steps forward and notices that BRAND is unconscious
WALSH
What's wrong with him?
SCHWARZ
We don't know
(Beat)
He's the highest-ranking officer here and the Dominion often took him for interrogation.
(Beat)
He's been like that for two days.
WALSH opens her medical Tricorder and scans BRAND
WALSH
I've got to get him to sickbay
TERRELL
Commander Marlinson, go with her
(Beat)
Give Admiral Liu a progress report
MARLINSON

TERRELL
You lot can help us free any others
EXT. PERIMETER FENCE
An ARGO CLASS ground vehicle drive toward a Dominion designed transport inhibitor. WORFIELD activates the Phaser Cannon and destroys the inhibitor.
WORFIELD
One down nineteen to go
PERIM starts to drive toward the next one
DANTON
I here you may be leaving us, Commander
PERIM

DANTON
It's just a rumour going round the ship
(Beat)

PERIM

I have been thinking a great deal about my position on Genesis but I haven't decided what to do about it yet

WORFIELD fires the Phaser Cannon again destroying the next one

WALSH picks up a Medical Tricorder and begins to scan BRAND
WALSH (Cont.)
He's stable for the moment but I've no idea how long it'll last

I want a complete subatomic scan and blood test ASAP
HARRINGTON

What did they do to you?
INT. DOMINION LABORATORY
An abandoned Dominion Laboratory. The consoles and lights are all deactivated and there are various pieces of scientific equipment around the room.
The door begins to glow and then is blown in by a Starfleet Phaser blast.
TERRELL and MEKAR enter
TERRELL
This isn't another barracks
MEKAR
No
(Beat)
This is much more important
TERRELL
Nothing's more important than a life, Subcommander
MEKAR
If you say so, Captain
TERRELL gives MEKAR a confused look
TERRELL
Excuse me for saying this
(Beat)
But that sounds far too much like a Klingon perspective
MEKAR

JAYKE and HARRINGTON are sat in the cockpit of the shuttle heading down to the planet.

If the Dominion were torturing prisoners here I wouldn't be so sure about that
HARRINGTON
I suppose this place could house a few horrors
JAYKE
At least the Jem'Hadar have left

They are not natural
(Beat)
They were made not born. I hope the Federation never has to revert to genetics to solve any problems

The ARGO CLASS ground vehicle rolls up to another transport inhibitor

The group drive back and reach the site just as the SPARROW lands and JAYKE and HARRINGTON exit the craft.

It seems that the Captain stumbled across some kind of laboratory

WORFIELD, DANTON, JAYKE and HARRINGTON head toward the open doors of the penal colony leaving PERIM in the ground vehicle watching them walk away.

WALSH injects BRAND with a hypospray and he slowly regains consciousness As he wakes he starts and WALSH has to hold him down

Unfortunately the Dominion levelled most of Cardassia Prime before they surrendered

Well over half of the population were killed. That's not including the fleet losses or the disease and famine they've got at the moment.

INT. PENAL COLONY CORRIDOR
TERRELL, MEKAR and KRATEC are walking down a corridor.
Every door they pass is open and there are no other people about

Maybe we should recommend this place as a shore leave resort

You'd have to be completely insane to come here voluntarily

WORFIELD and KIEV are sat talking while JAYKE is stood at one of the consoles working.

Why is it that the Dominion hates chairs?
WORFIELD
Maybe it's coded into their genetics

JAYKE taps a few controls and the lights and consoles activate in the room
JAYKE (Cont.)

JAYKE continues working and then begins to look worried.
JAYKE (Cont.)

EXT. SPACE
GENESIS is in orbit of Kelrabi IV. Several Cardassian defence platforms come into view and start to activate.
INT. BRIDGE
ARCHER is in the CAPTAIN'S CHAIR, BENVAR at CONN, CURTIS at OPS, DANTON at Tactical and ENSIGN GENA RYDER at SCIENCE.
On the screen the Defence Platforms begin to activate.
ARCHER
Red Alert
(Beat)
Commander Marlinson report to the bridge
DANTON
Shields are online
(Beat)
Weapons are active
INT. DOMINION LABORATORY
Same as before
WORFIELD

JAYKE
I activated the Defence Platforms
WORFIELD

WORFIELD runs across the room to another of the now active consoles
WORFIELD (Cont.)

The lights on her console suddenly go out
WORFIELD sighs
WORFIELD (Cont.)
Thank god for that
(Beat, she taps her COMM badge)

The same as before
ARCHER

WORFIELD V.O.
Is everyone all right up there?
ARCHER
Yes
(Beat)
Was that you trying to destroy the ship?
WORFIELD V.O.
No, just Enim trying to find the power switch
ARCHER
No harm done
(Beat)

Archer shakes her head and smiles.
INT. SPARROW-COCKPIT
MEKAR and KRATEC are talking. MEKAR is piloting the shuttle and out of the window you see the change as the shuttle exits the atmosphere.
KRATEC
So how did the war end?
MEKAR
It was complicated. We almost lost. About three months before the end of the war the Breen entered an alliance with the Dominion.
KRATEC
The Breen?
MEKAR
Yes, they had this Energy Dampening Weapon that sucked a ship dry of any energy it could produce. In the end some Starfleet engineer came up with a way of neutralising the threat and the combined alliance fleet assaulted the Cardassian system. During the battle the Cardassians switched sides and the Dominion fled to Cardassia Prime.
MEKAR (Cont.)
Before we engaged someone managed to make the Dominion surrender. We don't know whom because the information was classified after the signing of the treaty.
KRATEC
Sounds like it was one hell of a fight
MEKAR
It would have been it we were attacking the Dominion at Cardassia afterwards
(Beat)
The war may have turned out differently.
KRATEC
I thought that the Senate planned to break the alliance with the Federation when the war ended.
MEKAR
They did
(Beat)
There were more debates about that than there were about entering the war in the first place.
KRATEC
And so the Empire decided to stay allied with the Federation?
MEKAR
Yes. At the time it was a wise decision
(Beat)
The fleets of all the major powers in the quadrant were a shambles; it was wise to stick together so any problems can be faced together.
KRATEC
That does make sense
(Beat)
I will never understand politics
MEKAR
I really doubt that you are the only person to not understand Romulan politics
(Beat)
This Federation certainly doesn't
KRATEC
I do expect some know more about it than others
MEKAR
We do have a member of Starfleet Intelligence and an ex-Intelligence officer serving aboard the ship
KRATEC
And a member of the Tal Shiar
MEKAR
Do not mention that
(Beat)
I do not believe that my fellow crewmembers know of my allegiance to the Tal Shiar
KRATEC
Or mine

Then let's make sure it stays that way

The SPARROW docks with GENESIS as the ship continues to orbit Kelrabi IV.
INT. TERRELL'S READY ROOM
TERRELL is sat at his desk drinking a Rakjajino while MARLINSON is sat on the other side with a PADD in her hand.
TERRELL
So how many survivors have we recovered?
MARLINSON glances at the PADD before responding
MARLINSON
A hundred and fifty Seven
TERRELL
More than I would have expected
(Beat)
There were surprisingly few injuries as well
MARLINSON
The Dominion troops abandoned the place four months ago
(Beat)
Any injuries have been given the chance to heal
TERRELL
Except for Rachel's patient
(Beat)
I wonder what they did to him?
MARLINSON
What shall I tell Lieutenant Jayke about his study of the Dominion Laboratory?
TERRELL
Tell him he's got 48 hours to gather as much information as possible
(Beat)
I would stay longer but these people have been confined long enough.
MARLINSON
Understood
MARLINSON stands from the chair and walks to the door, she then turns back to TERRELL

I'm sorry about the time limit Jayke but we've really got to get our passengers away from this planet.

JAYKE goes over to another console where his Tricorder is sat. He picks it up and starts scanning the equipment in the room.

Ensign Kiev, can you get someone to send down some Transport Units so this stuff can be taken up to Genesis.

KIEV taps his COMM badge and begins to talk to someone in hushed tones that we cannot hear.
WORFIELD walks over to JAYKE and talks quietly to him
WORFIELD
How can you narrow down what to study here?
JAYKE
Well I don't want to look at any of that
JAYKE gestures to one half of the room where a large amount of dangerous looking equipment is sat. It is made up of what seems to be torture devices.
INT. SICKBAY
BRAND is laid out on a biobed with WALSH sat next to him. He is conscious but not totally himself.
Throughout this scene RAMIREZ is moving around doing various tasks but other than that Sickbay is deserted.
BRAND
Those two Klingons were always fighting over something. I think there was some kind of feud between their houses.
WALSH
I wouldn't be surprised. Over the past few years too many Klingons have done their own thing.

TERRELL is sitting at his desk pretending to read a report on a PADD; he is obviously not pleased with something. He stands from the desk and moves over to the replicator.

There is a third chair for JAYKE but it is empty. There are several boxes of Federation cargo on one side of the room containing PADD'S, tools and TRANSPORT UNITS.
JAYKE is talking to WALSH on the COMM

Jayke, I need as much information as you can find on what they did to this
Ketracel White and a sample if you can find it.
JAYKE
I don't think there's any here
(Beat)

Probably the most empty room on the entire ship. It is a man abroad. There are pieces of Romulan technology, including PADD'S and Engineering tools lying around. There seems to be a minimum of Starfleet equipment and technology in the room. The Federation computer console seems out of place from the rest of the room.
MEKAR and KRATEC enter.

There are no lights on in the room and it is very quiet. The only sound comes from the computer control panel where KRATEC is sat. We can see the light reflecting off of KRATEC'S face. We cannot see what he is looking at. He taps a few keys on the computer screen. The view turns to show the back of KRATEC'S head and the computer screen. The screen shows the schematics for GENESIS.
INT. TERRELL'S READY ROOM
TERRELL is sat at his desk doing nothing in particular; he is drinking another Rakjajino.
The door chime sounds
TERRELL

PERIM enters the room with a PADD in her hand
PERIM

She offers him the PADD

He reaches a door that doesn't open when he goes towards it

TERRELL comes into the room and slumps down on the sofa. He is exhausted.
TERRELL stands and goes to the desk. He taps a control on the screen

Captain's Personal Log Stardate: 53140. This mission is really getting to the crew, and me as well. There have been mixed emotions from everyone, arguments started for no reason and now one of my officers has requested a transfer. I can understand that Commander Perim is not enjoying having little to do but to quit after only two weeks. That does not seem like any Starfleet Officer that I know.
TERRELL looks over to his weapons collection and sees an obvious gap in the case.

TERRELL goes over to the case and looks closely. There is a gap and damage where the case has been forced open.

The lights have been dulled and it is obviously night. KIEV and WORFIELD are asleep in their chairs and JAYKE is sat, half awake, at the computer monitor. He is reading a file and is struggling to stay awake. JAYKE taps a control on the panel and the nest file appears. The audience cannot read it but it grabs JAYKE'S attention and he leans forward with his eyes wide-awake.
INT. BRIDGE
ARCHER is in the CAPTAIN'S CHAIR, ALKOR at CONN, SUCH at OPS and ENSIGN PATRICK ROBINSON at TACTICAL.
The room is dark and it is obviously the night shift. None of the present officers look particularly happy and there is an uneasy silence around the room.
The aft turbolift door opens and a figure steps out. We are behind his and cannot see anything but the bridge and the back of his head.
ARCHER turns the CAPTAIN'S CHAIR around to face the visitor
ARCHER
What are you doing here?
The view spins around to show the visitors face, its KRATEC
KRATEC
Just doing some sightseeing
ARCHER O.S.
I'm sorry but you'll have to go elsewhere
KRATEC
I'm afraid not Lieutenant
KRATEC lifts his arm revealing the Phaser stolen from TERRELL'S quarters.
Circle around to show ARCHER'S reaction. She is shocked but KRATEC fires stunning her. He then turns to ROBINSON and shoots again. ALKOR and SUCH stand from their stations and go for the weapons locker on the Port side but KRATEC stuns them both before they reach it.

JAYKE is sat wide-awake at the computer controls. WORFIELD and KIEV are still asleep.
JAYKE reads the document and picks up a PADD from the pile from the pile next to him. He taps some controls and data appears on the PADD.
JAYKE
(Loudly)
Commander Worfield
WORFIELD wakes suddenly; KIEV keeps sleeping
WORFIELD
(Drowsy)
What is it?
JAYKE stands up and walks toward WORFIELD
He offers her the PADD
JAYKE
I need you to take this to Doctor Walsh
WORFIELD
(Less Drowsy)

JAYKE
The chemical composition of the drug that Captain Brand was injected with
WORFIELD stands up and takes the PADD, she has shaken off her drowsiness.

ARCHER, ALKOR, SUCH and ROBINSION are all unconscious where they were shot.
KRATEC places the Phaser in a hidden pocket before moving to the CAPTAIN'S CHAIR and removing ARCHER from it. He sits down.

KRATEC stares at the stars and KELRABI IV on the viewscreen for a moment.

EXT. PENAL COLONY ENTRANCE
The colony seems dark and empty.
The SPARROW is sat on the landing pad. KIEV and DANTON are carrying various pieces of Dominion equipment into the SPARROW.
WORFIELD and JAYKE exit the Penal Colony and walk towards the Shuttle
JAYKE turns around and looks at the building for a few moments
JAYKE
I won't be sad to leave here
WORFIELD
Do you think anyone will ever come back?
JAYKE

Come on we need to get back to the ship
JAYKE, WORFIELD, DANTON and KIEV all board the shuttle. The hatch seals itself shut and the SPARROW lifts off a moment later.
INT. TORPEDO BAY
The entire senior staff is present. Many others are also present including the Beta shift bridge crew: ALKOR, SUCH, DANTON, ROBINSON etc. VAN'AR and MEKAR are wearing civilian clothing and all of the Starfleet Officers are in their dress uniforms.
On the Torpedo Launchers sit two Torpedo Tubes, side-by-side, one has the Federation Flag on the top and the other has the Romulan flag.
WALSH is standing on the side of the Federation flag and MEKAR is on the side of the Romulan flag

I did not know Captain Jake Brand for a long time but the time I spent with him was a happy one
